The Drive From Stevenage to Gatwick
From Stevenage, the driver takes the A1(M) south to the M25 at junction 23, then usually heads anticlockwise round the west of London, past the M1, M40 and Heathrow, to junction 7 and the M23 spur into Gatwick. In clear traffic it’s around an hour and 35 minutes for the 81 miles.
At busy times, especially on weekday mornings when the western M25 is congested around Heathrow, drivers may go clockwise instead, across the Dartford Crossing. Both directions are roughly similar in distance, and the fixed fare covers whichever way is quicker on the day, including any crossing charge.
Planning Your Pickup Time
Airlines generally ask you to arrive two hours before short-haul flights and three hours before long-haul. From Stevenage we’d suggest:
| Flight from Gatwick | Suggested pickup in Stevenage |
|---|---|
| 6:00am short-haul | 2:15am |
| 9:00am short-haul | 4:45am to 5:00am |
| 12:00pm long-haul | 6:45am (M25 peak) |
| 5:00pm short-haul | 12:45pm to 1:00pm |
Taxi, Train or Coach?
Thameslink trains from Stevenage run through central London, and some services continue to Gatwick Airport; on others you’ll need to change in London. Allow roughly an hour and 30 minutes to an hour and 45 minutes. The train is a reasonable choice in the daytime with light luggage, but the earliest services won’t get you to Gatwick for a dawn departure, and the trains through St Pancras and London Bridge are packed at commuter times.
Split between four people in a saloon, the taxi comes to about £34.12 each, door to terminal.
Stevenage Pickups
We pick up across Stevenage: the Old Town and High Street, the neighbourhoods built around the new town such as Shephall, Bedwell, Chells, Pin Green, Broadwater and St Nicholas, and Great Ashby on the edge of town. If you live in a flat with entry codes, add them to the booking notes. Your driver waits up to 5 minutes free at the door.
Business Travel From Stevenage
Stevenage is home to large engineering, aerospace and pharmaceutical employers, and many staff fly from Gatwick for European trips. The fixed fare is confirmed in writing for expenses, and the Executive car gives a quieter ride for calls or work on the way.

Arriving Back at Gatwick
For the journey home, give us your flight number. We track the flight and your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall, holding a name board if you’d like one. You get one hour of free waiting from the time the flight actually lands, so passport queues and baggage delays aren’t a worry. The drive home to Stevenage usually takes 95 minutes to two hours, depending on the M25.
North or South Terminal?
Gatwick has two terminals, linked by a free shuttle train that takes about two minutes. Your airline decides which one you use; the flight number on your booking lets us check. If you’re not sure, the Gatwick postcodes are RH6 0NP for the South Terminal and RH6 0PJ for the North Terminal, and our Gatwick postcode guide explains which airlines use which.
Dropping Off and Collecting at Gatwick
If a friend or relative drives you instead, they’ll pay Gatwick’s £10 forecourt drop-off charge, and collecting you means the Gatwick short stay pick up car parks, charged by the time spent there. With an Airports Taxi UK booking, the drop-off charge is already in the fare and your driver handles the parking when they collect you. Our guide to picking someone up at Gatwick explains the options if you are collecting someone yourself.
