A taxi from Bedford to Gatwick Airport costs £156.61 in a saloon to the South Terminal and £153.65 to the North Terminal with Airports Taxi UK, a fixed fare for a drive of about 97 miles and 1 hour 52 minutes. The price includes ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and the Gatwick drop-off charge, so the quote is what you pay.

Bedford to Gatwick is a long trip, close to 100 miles from Bedfordshire to the Sussex border, but it’s one plenty of Bedford households make every year because Gatwick has the holiday flights they want. There are two realistic ways to do it: the direct Thameslink train, or an airport transfer to Gatwick from your front door. For early departures, families and anyone carrying proper holiday luggage, a fixed-fare taxi is the more comfortable choice.

Below is the full taxi to Gatwick cost for each vehicle, the route and drive time, pickup times for different flights, and an honest comparison with the train from Bedford to Gatwick Airport.

The Drive From Bedford to Gatwick

From Bedford, your driver usually heads to the M1 at junction 13 via the A421, follows the M1 south to the M25 at junction 21, then goes anticlockwise round the west of London to junction 7 and the M23 spur into Gatwick. Our booking system puts the journey at about 97 miles and just under two hours in clear traffic.

The M1 near Luton and the western M25 around Heathrow are the two slow points, especially on weekday mornings. When those are congested, drivers sometimes switch to the A1 and M25 clockwise via the Dartford Crossing. The fixed fare stays the same whichever way round you go, and any crossing charge is included.

Planning Your Pickup Time

Airlines usually ask you to be at Gatwick two hours before short-haul flights and three hours before long-haul. Because this is a two-hour drive, pickups from Bedford are early:

Flight from Gatwick Suggested pickup in Bedford
6:00am short-haul 1:45am to 2:00am
9:00am short-haul 4:30am
12:00pm long-haul 6:15am to 6:30am
5:00pm short-haul 12:30pm

Night pickups are routine for us. If you’d rather have a little more slack for a long-haul flight, tell us and we’ll set the time earlier.

Taxi, Train or Coach?

Thameslink runs direct trains from Bedford to Gatwick Airport through central London, taking around an hour and 45 minutes to two hours. It’s a long ride but no change is needed, which makes it a good option for a solo traveller with light luggage at a sensible hour. The drawbacks are the very early flights, when the first trains are too late, and the crowded commuter trains through London in the rush hours, with little room for large suitcases.

For a family of four, the saloon works out at about £39.15 each, from your door to the terminal and without carrying bags through St Pancras.

Bedford Pickups

We collect from the town centre and the Embankment, the estates in Kempston, Brickhill, Putnoe and Goldington, the new developments at Wixams and Biddenham, and the villages around the town. If your home is on a new-build estate that sat navs don’t yet know well, add directions or a what3words reference when you book. Your driver will wait up to 5 minutes free at the door.

Gatwick or Luton From Bedford?

Luton Airport is much closer to Bedford, about 25 minutes down the M1, and covers many European routes. But Gatwick has a far wider range of holiday and long-haul flights, including easyJet’s biggest UK base, TUI, Jet2 and British Airways. If your flight is from Gatwick, the extra distance is worth it; if Luton has the flight you need, we can take you there too.

Areas Around Bedford We Cover

The same fixed fares to Gatwick cover Kempston, Biddenham, Wixams, Wootton, Clapham, Sharnbrook, Ampthill, Flitwick, Sandy and Cardington. Enter your exact address in the booking form for your price.

Arriving Back at Gatwick

For the journey home, give us your flight number. We track the flight and your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall, holding a name board if you’d like one. You get one hour of free waiting from the time the flight actually lands, so passport queues and baggage delays aren’t a worry. The drive back to Bedford usually takes around two hours.

North or South Terminal?

Gatwick has two terminals, linked by a free shuttle train that takes about two minutes. Your airline decides which one you use; the flight number on your booking lets us check. If you’re not sure, the Gatwick postcodes are RH6 0NP for the South Terminal and RH6 0PJ for the North Terminal, and our Gatwick postcode guide explains which airlines use which.

Dropping Off and Collecting at Gatwick

If a friend or relative drives you instead, they’ll pay Gatwick’s £10 forecourt drop-off charge, and collecting you means the Gatwick short stay pick up car parks, charged by the time spent there. With an Airports Taxi UK booking, the drop-off charge is already in the fare and your driver handles the parking when they collect you. Our guide to picking someone up at Gatwick explains the options if you are collecting someone yourself.

Which Vehicle Do You Need?

  • Up to four people with light luggage: saloon at £156.61 (two large cases).
  • Four with a large case each: estate at £169.43.
  • Five or six people: MPV at £201.31, our 7 seater taxi to Gatwick Airport option.
  • Up to eight: 8 Seater at £201.31, a minibus to Gatwick Airport, about £25.16 each when full.
  • Premium: Executive car at £192.87, or Executive Minivan at £248.20 for a luxury airport transfer to Gatwick. See our Gatwick chauffeur service for a chauffeur to Gatwick.

Booking Ahead

You can book as soon as your flights are confirmed. The price is fixed at the time of booking and doesn’t rise at peak times, so there’s no advantage in waiting. In the school holidays and at bank holiday weekends, early-morning slots go quickly, so booking a week or two ahead is sensible. If your flight time changes, update the booking or call us and we’ll move the pickup.

What’s Included

  • A fixed fare including ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and the Gatwick drop-off charge.
  • 5 minutes of free waiting at your door when we collect you.
  • One hour of free waiting after landing on airport pickups, with flight tracking.
  • Your driver meeting you inside the arrivals hall on the way home.
  • Child seats at £10 per seat, and 5% off the return leg when you book both ways together.

Why Book With Airports Taxi UK?

A two-hour run to Gatwick is a proper long distance taxi journey, and we price it as one: a fixed fare agreed in advance, drivers who know the M1 and M25 at night, flight tracking on your return, and a team on the phone if your plans change.
