Which way does the driver go?
There are two sensible routes from Tower Bridge to Gatwick and the driver picks between them on the day. The direct one heads south through Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle, then down the A23 through Brixton, Streatham and Croydon to the M23. It is shorter, but every set of lights in south London adds time. The other goes east and south-east to the M25, round to junction 7 and down the M23. It covers more miles yet is often quicker, which is why our booker plans the route at around 51 miles and 72 minutes.
Either way the price stays the same. You are not charged for the extra miles if the driver takes the motorway to avoid a jam.
Pickups north and south of the bridge
Tower Bridge sits between two very different patches of London. On the south bank, Shad Thames is a maze of narrow cobbled lanes between old warehouses, with Butler’s Wharf, City Hall’s old site and the flats along Queen Elizabeth Street. On the north bank, Tower Hill, St Katharine Docks and the hotels by the Tower of London are reached from Tower Bridge Approach and East Smithfield.
Give us the full address and, if it is a block of flats, the name of the building and the entrance you will use. Shad Thames has very little space to stop, so the driver may wait at the end of the lane and call you. Hotel guests are collected from the main door.
When the bridge lifts
Tower Bridge still opens for tall ships and river traffic, several hundred times a year. A lift closes the road for around ten minutes, and the bridge also closes for events and maintenance. The lift times are published in advance, and our drivers check them along with any planned closures before they set off. If your pickup is on the opposite bank from the driver’s approach, they cross at London Bridge instead, so a lift does not make you late.
Tower Bridge to Gatwick: taxi or train?
By train you would walk or take a cab to London Bridge, then catch Thameslink or a Southern train to Gatwick. On a good day that is about 30 minutes on the train, plus the walk with your bags, the stairs and the wait on the platform. It works well for one person with a backpack.
The taxi wins when you have suitcases, children, an early flight before the trains are frequent, or two or more people. For four people the saloon fare works out at about £25.82 each, door to terminal, with no changes and no lifting bags on and off trains.
Leaving for an early flight
Many Gatwick departures leave between 6am and 8am. At that hour the drive from Tower Bridge is quicker, often well under an hour, but check-in queues and security can still be long. For a European flight we suggest being picked up about three hours before departure, and three and a half for long-haul. On weekday mornings after 7am and on Friday afternoons, allow more.
For airport collections the driver tracks the flight, so an early or late landing is not a problem. You get one hour of free waiting from the time the plane lands, and the driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board. For home or hotel pickups, the first five minutes of waiting are free.
Families, groups and lots of luggage
Tower Bridge is a favourite base for families visiting London, and families tend to fly home with more than they arrived with. If there are four of you with four suitcases, book the estate (£112.41) rather than the saloon. Five or six people fit in the MPV, and a group of up to eight with a case each goes in the 8-seater. Pushchairs fold into the boot; tell us if you need a child seat and which age it is for.
What the fare includes
The price you see is the price you pay. It already covers the ULEZ and Congestion Charge where the route needs them, the airport’s drop-off or pick-up charge, and fuel. Nothing is added for luggage you told us about when you booked. A child seat is £10 per seat, so add it in the notes box and we bring the right size.
Fares do not go up in heavy traffic or late at night. If the M25 is slow on the day, that is our problem, not yours.
Why mention road charges at all? Because on a meter, or with some app firms, they are added at the end. London’s ULEZ applies every day, and the Congestion Charge applies in central London at set hours. Every UK airport we serve also charges cars to drop off or pick up near the terminal. Rather than leave you guessing, we fold all of it into one number you can see before you book.
Coming back from Gatwick to Tower Bridge
The same fixed price works in reverse. Book Gatwick to Tower Bridge, add your flight number, and the driver meets you in arrivals at the North or South Terminal. We bring you to the door of your flat, your office or your hotel by the river, including St Katharine Docks and the Tower of London hotels.
North Terminal or South Terminal?
Gatwick has two terminals about a mile apart, linked by a free shuttle train that takes a couple of minutes. Airlines move between them from time to time, and easyJet uses both, so the safest thing is to give us your flight number. We set the drop-off for the right terminal, and if your airline changes it the driver goes straight there. Both terminals have a drop-off area right outside departures; the fee for it is already in your fare.
Which car do you need?
Pick the car by people and by suitcases, not by people alone. A saloon takes four passengers but only two large cases. An estate takes four with four cases. For five or six people choose the MPV, and for seven or eight with luggage, the 8-seater or the executive minivan.
| Car | Passengers | Large cases |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 4 | 2 |
| Estate | 4 | 4 |
| Executive | 3 | 2 |
| MPV | 6 | 4 |
| 8-seater | 8 | 8 |
| Executive minivan | 8 | 8 |
Hand luggage is rarely the problem; large cases are. As a rule of thumb, one large case equals two cabin bags. A folded pushchair takes about the space of one large case, and so does a set of golf clubs. If in doubt, go one size up: the difference in price is small compared with leaving a bag behind.
Business travel from the City and Tower Hill
Tower Hill and the eastern edge of the City are full of offices whose staff fly from Gatwick. The executive car (£130.15) is popular for client trips, and if several colleagues are heading to the same flight, one MPV is usually cheaper than three separate cars. Ask for a receipt with your company name or reference on it and we put it there.
Nearby streets and areas we cover
This page is for the Tower Bridge area, but the same car and the same kind of price apply a few streets away. We regularly collect from Bermondsey Street and Bermondsey Square, Borough and London Bridge, Wapping and Wapping High Street, Aldgate, Whitechapel, Spitalfields and the Barbican. The fare moves a little with the exact address because the booker prices the real route, so type your postcode into the form for the exact figure.
If you are staying in a short-let flat and do not know the postcode, send the address as it appears on your booking confirmation. Many of the riverside blocks have their own names, such as the converted warehouses along Shad Thames, and the driver needs the right one.
How to book
Enter the pickup and drop-off in the form at the top of this page, pick a date and time, and the booker shows a fixed price for every car. Choose one, add your flight number if you have it, and confirm. Prefer to talk? Call +44 7575 470883, any time of day.
Once you book you get a confirmation with the details. The day before, check the pickup time and address are right; if anything needs changing, call us and we update it. Keep your phone on during the pickup window so the driver can reach you if they cannot find the door.
