London Waterloo is the busiest station in the country, but it isn’t a Gatwick station. Trains to the airport leave from Victoria and London Bridge, so if you arrive at Waterloo from Surrey, Hampshire or the South Coast with a flight to catch, you’d have to cross London first. A pre-booked car can collect you at Waterloo and go straight to Gatwick. Our booker puts the drive at about 40 miles, with a route time of roughly 83 minutes.

Who Uses This Route

  • Rail passengers arriving at Waterloo from places like Southampton, Portsmouth, Guildford or Woking, who need Gatwick rather than central London.
  • Cruise passengers who’ve come up from Southampton by train and are flying home from Gatwick.
  • People staying on the South Bank, in hotels around Waterloo, Lambeth and Southwark.
  • Office workers in SE1 heading straight to the airport from work.

Meeting You at Waterloo

The station has several exits and a busy road layout. When you book, tell us which train you’re arriving on and we’ll agree a pickup point outside the station that the driver can reach. Give us a mobile number and the driver will call when they’re there. If your train is late, let us know and we’ll adjust. The first 5 minutes of waiting are free, and we’ll be reasonable about short train delays.

Taxi Compared With Changing Trains

By rail, getting from Waterloo to Gatwick usually means the Tube or a bus to Victoria or London Bridge, then a train. That’s two changes and a lot of stairs with luggage. Black cabs from the rank will take you to the airport, but on the meter the fare depends on traffic, and you won’t know the total until you arrive. With a pre-booked car the price is fixed in advance and includes everything.

The Route South

From Waterloo, drivers head south through Kennington and Brixton on the A23, then Streatham and Croydon, joining the M23 for the final stretch to Gatwick. The booker estimates about 83 minutes. At peak times, south London traffic is the main variable, so if your flight is mid-morning or late afternoon, leave plenty of margin.

North or South Terminal

Gatwick has two terminals, and the airline determines which one you use. Put your flight number in the booking and the driver will check it on the day. Our North Terminal and South Terminal pages explain where you’ll be dropped off and met.

The Return Journey: Gatwick to Waterloo

If you’re landing at Gatwick and heading back to Waterloo to catch a train home, we’ll get you to the station. Book with your inbound flight number. We track the flight, the driver meets you in arrivals and you get an hour of free waiting after landing. Tell us which train you’re aiming for so we can say whether it’s realistic.

Choosing a Vehicle

For two people with large cases, a saloon is fine. For four, book the estate. Cruise passengers with a fortnight’s luggage usually need the MPV or 8 seater, which cost the same on this route. Child seats are available at £10 each.
