A taxi from St Albans to Gatwick Airport costs £115.89 in a saloon to the South Terminal and £112.93 to the North Terminal with Airports Taxi UK, a fixed fare for a drive of about 65 miles and 1 hour 17 minutes. The price includes ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and the Gatwick drop-off charge, so the quote is what you pay.

St Albans to London Gatwick is about 65 miles, right across the capital from Hertfordshire to Sussex. Unlike most towns this far from the airport, St Albans has a direct Thameslink train, so the real question is whether a train or a door-to-door airport transfer to Gatwick suits your trip better. For early flights, families and anyone with heavy luggage, the taxi usually wins: no carrying cases to St Albans City station, no standing room on a busy train, and a driver waiting at your door.

This page sets out the fixed taxi to Gatwick cost for each vehicle, the route and drive time, suggested pickup times, and an honest comparison with the train.

The Drive From St Albans to Gatwick

From St Albans, your driver joins the M25 at junction 21A or 22 and normally goes anticlockwise round the west of London, past the M40, M4 and Heathrow, to junction 7 and the M23 spur into Gatwick. That’s about 65 miles and roughly an hour and 20 minutes in clear traffic.

The western M25 between junctions 16 and 12 is one of the busiest stretches of motorway in Britain, so in the weekday rush hours drivers sometimes go clockwise instead, over the Dartford Crossing. Either way the fare is fixed when you book and doesn’t change with the route.

Planning Your Pickup Time

Plan to be at Gatwick two hours before a short-haul departure and three before long-haul. From St Albans we’d suggest:

Flight from Gatwick Suggested pickup in St Albans
6:00am short-haul 2:30am to 2:45am
9:30am short-haul 5:45am
11:30am long-haul 6:45am to 7:00am (M25 peak)
4:00pm short-haul 12:30pm

Taxi, Train or Coach?

Thameslink runs direct trains from St Albans City to Gatwick Airport through central London, taking a little over an hour. It’s a good option if you’re travelling light and leaving at a sensible hour. The catch is the first trains of the day: for a 6:00am or 7:00am departure, they often don’t get you there in time. Trains through London also get very busy at commuter times, and there’s limited space for large suitcases.

For two or more people the gap in cost narrows quickly. Four people in a saloon pay about £28.97 each, from the front door to the terminal.

St Albans Pickups

We collect from the city centre and the streets around the cathedral, Fleetville, Marshalswick, Jersey Farm, Bernards Heath and the villages outside the city. If you live on a private road or in a flat with a buzzer system, add details when you book. Your driver will wait up to 5 minutes free at the door, so having bags ready helps you set off on time.

Business Travel From St Albans

Plenty of our St Albans passengers are business travellers catching early flights to European offices. If your company is paying, the fixed fare is confirmed in writing when you book, which keeps expenses simple, and the Executive car gives you a quieter ride to make calls or work on the way. Regular travellers can rebook the same journey in a couple of minutes.

Areas Around St Albans We Cover

The same fixed fares to Gatwick cover Harpenden, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, London Colney, Park Street, Bricket Wood, Chiswell Green, Colney Heath and Hatfield. Enter your exact address in the booking form for your door-to-door price.

Arriving Back at Gatwick

For the journey home, give us your flight number. We track the flight and your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall, holding a name board if you’d like one. You get one hour of free waiting from the time the flight actually lands, so passport queues and baggage delays aren’t a worry. The drive home to St Albans usually takes 80 to 95 minutes, longer in the evening rush on the M25.

North or South Terminal?

Gatwick has two terminals, linked by a free shuttle train that takes about two minutes. Your airline decides which one you use; the flight number on your booking lets us check. If you’re not sure, the Gatwick postcodes are RH6 0NP for the South Terminal and RH6 0PJ for the North Terminal, and our Gatwick postcode guide explains which airlines use which.

Dropping Off and Collecting at Gatwick

If a friend or relative drives you instead, they’ll pay Gatwick’s £10 forecourt drop-off charge, and collecting you means the Gatwick short stay pick up car parks, charged by the time spent there. With an Airports Taxi UK booking, the drop-off charge is already in the fare and your driver handles the parking when they collect you. Our guide to picking someone up at Gatwick explains the options if you are collecting someone yourself.
