The Route

Your driver takes the M11 south to the M25, goes round the north of London, and joins the M40 to Oxford. It’s about 96 miles. Outside peak times it takes one hour 45 minutes to two hours 15 minutes. The northern M25 is busiest on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. The fare stays the same however long the drive takes.

Taxi or Public Transport?

Getting from Stansted to Oxford without a car usually means the Stansted Express into Liverpool Street, the Elizabeth line to Paddington, then a train to Oxford. With luggage, children or a late flight, a direct car is far simpler. Four people sharing a saloon pay about £38 each.

University Arrivals

Students, academics and visiting researchers often fly into Stansted from Europe and head to Oxford. If you’re going to a college, use the porters’ lodge address so your driver arrives at the right gate. Students with a lot of luggage at the start of term usually choose an estate, which takes four large cases.

Meeting Your Driver at Stansted

Stansted has one terminal. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall with your name on a board. We track your flight, and you get 60 minutes of free waiting from the time you land.

Fares Across Oxford and Oxfordshire

We drive to any address. Saloon and 8-seater fares from Stansted Airport, quoted from our online booker on 29 October 2026 for a midday pickup:

Stansted to Distance Saloon 8-seater Drive estimate
Headington (John Radcliffe Hospital) 92 miles £144.94 £186.77 About 1 hr 37 min
Kidlington 96 miles £151.98 £195.69 About 1 hr 44 min
Oxford station 96 miles £153.48 £197.42 About 1 hr 48 min
Bicester Village 100 miles £153.53 £197.85 About 1 hr 43 min
Abingdon 97 miles £154.86 £199.16 About 1 hr 50 min
Witney 104 miles £163.18 £209.82 About 1 hr 56 min

Headington is on the eastern edge of Oxford, the first part of the city you reach from the M40. That’s why it’s cheaper than the city centre, even though it’s in the same city. Witney is furthest out, on the western side.

Oxford to Stansted

For a flight out of Stansted, a saloon from Oxford station costs £152.38 and the 8-seater £196.00, quoted on 29 October 2026. Book both directions together for the 5% return discount: a saloon from Stansted to Oxford station and back comes to £290.57 instead of £305.86.

Many of Stansted’s European flights leave early in the morning. For a 7am departure, you’d want to be at the airport by about 5am. With a drive of nearly two hours and a margin for roadworks, that means leaving Oxford at around 2:45am. There’s no surcharge for night pickups.

Bicester Village

Bicester Village, the designer outlet north-east of Oxford, is a common first stop for visitors flying in from overseas. From Stansted it’s £153.53 in a saloon, almost the same as Oxford station. If you’re going there with your luggage before checking in to a hotel, consider booking two journeys: Stansted to your hotel, and a separate trip to the Village the next day. That way your cases aren’t in the car while you shop.

Hospital Visits in Headington

The John Radcliffe, the Churchill and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre are all in Headington. At £144.94 from Stansted, the John Radcliffe is the cheapest Oxford address on this route. If you’re flying in to visit someone in hospital, give us the hospital name and the entrance you need in the booking notes. These are large sites with several drop-off points.

Why the Route Goes Round the M25

Stansted and Oxford are on opposite sides of London, and there’s no motorway across the middle. The quickest route is almost always the M11 south to the M25, round the north of London to the M40, then west to Oxford. On a bad day, the M25 between the M11 and the M40 is the slowest part. Your fare is fixed when you book, so it doesn’t change if the drive takes longer.

Landing Late at Stansted

Stansted has a lot of late-evening arrivals from European cities. After about 11pm, the rail route to Oxford gets hard, because you’d need the last Stansted Express into Liverpool Street, the Elizabeth line across to Paddington, and one of the last trains west. Miss any of them and you’re stuck in London. With a booked car, your driver follows your flight and waits inside the arrivals hall, and you have 60 minutes of free waiting from landing. A delayed flight doesn’t leave you without a way home.

Is Stansted the Best Airport for Oxford?

For Oxford, Heathrow is the nearest major airport and usually the cheaper taxi. See Heathrow to Oxford for those fares. Stansted makes sense when it has the flight you want, which is often the case for low-cost routes to central and eastern Europe. If you’re booking flights and the price difference is small, it’s worth comparing the total cost, including getting to and from the airport.
