The Route

From Heathrow, your driver joins the M4 west past Reading, Swindon and Bristol, crosses the Prince of Wales Bridge into Wales, and comes off near Cardiff. It’s about 138 miles, almost all of it motorway. On a drive this long you may want a break. Ask when you book if you’d like a short stop at a motorway services.

Why a Taxi Instead of the Train?

By train, you’d go from Heathrow into Paddington, change for the Great Western service to Cardiff Central, and then take a taxi to your address. That’s at least two changes with luggage. A taxi makes most sense for:

  • families and groups, where one fare covers everyone: four people sharing a saloon pay about £51 each
  • late arrivals, when connections thin out
  • addresses away from the station, such as the Vale of Glamorgan or the valleys north of the city
  • anyone with heavy luggage, sports kit or a lot of bags

Meeting Your Driver at Heathrow

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall of your terminal with your name on a board. We track your flight, so the pickup time moves if you land early or late. You get 60 minutes of free waiting from landing. That’s useful at Heathrow, where passport queues can be long after an international flight.

Travelling to Heathrow from Cardiff

We drive the same route in reverse for departures. Allow at least three hours for the drive plus check-in, and more at peak times on the M4. You can book both directions in one go and get the 5% return discount.

Fares from Each Heathrow Terminal

The terminal you land at makes only a small difference to the price. Saloon and 8-seater fares to Cardiff Central, quoted from our online booker on 29 October 2026 for a midday pickup:

Heathrow terminal Saloon Executive 8-seater Drive estimate
Terminal 2 £205.66 £250.52 £264.20 About 2 hr 30 min
Terminal 3 £205.89 £250.77 £264.48 About 2 hr 31 min
Terminal 4 £209.24 £254.61 £268.67 About 2 hr 35 min
Terminal 5 £203.99 £248.60 £262.11 About 2 hr 28 min

Terminal 5 has its own spur road off the M25, a short run from the junction with the M4, which is why it comes out cheapest. Terminal 4 is on the southern side, so the route out is a little longer. Check your ticket for your terminal. British Airways mainly uses Terminal 5.

Fares to Other Places in South-East Wales

We drive to any address in Cardiff and the surrounding towns. Saloon and 8-seater fares from Heathrow Terminal 5, quoted on 29 October 2026:

Cardiff University (Cathays) 136 miles £198.63 £255.50

Cardiff Central 138 miles £203.99 £262.11
Penarth 149 miles £213.40 £274.43
Barry Island 149 miles £218.03 £280.03

For the valleys, Bridgend or anywhere else, enter the full address in the booking form above to see the fare.

Cardiff to Heathrow

The reverse journey costs almost the same. From Cardiff Central to Heathrow Terminal 5 it’s £203.63 in a saloon and £261.64 in an 8-seater, quoted on 29 October 2026. If you book the outbound and return together, the 5% return discount applies. For a saloon from Terminal 5 to Cardiff Central and back, that’s £387.24 instead of £407.62.

For a departure, work back from your flight. Allow about two and a half hours for the drive, plus a margin for the M4 around Reading and the M25 junction, and aim to arrive at least three hours before a long-haul flight.

Match Days and Events in Cardiff

The Principality Stadium is right in the city centre, and roads around it are often closed on match and concert days. If you’re flying in for an international rugby match or a big concert, your driver may need to drop you at the nearest open point rather than at the door. Add a note about the event when you book, and give the hotel address rather than the stadium. Traffic on the M4 into Cardiff is also heavier on those days, so allow extra time.

Students Arriving for Term

Cardiff University’s main campus is in Cathays, just north of the city centre. A saloon from Heathrow costs £198.63 there. International students often arrive with more luggage than a saloon can take, so an estate, which takes four large cases, is usually the better choice. Give us the address of your hall of residence, not just the university name, so your driver goes to the right building.

Early Morning Long-Haul Arrivals

Many long-haul flights from North America and Asia land at Heathrow early in the morning, often before 7am. That’s when the train route to Cardiff is least convenient: you’d be heading into Paddington in the early rush with your bags, then waiting for a Great Western train west. We charge the same fare at any hour, so a 5:30am pickup costs the same as one at midday. And because we track your flight, an early landing doesn’t leave you waiting for a driver who’s still on the way.

After an overnight flight, the main benefit is simple: you can sleep in the back for most of the two and a half hours and arrive at your door.

Choosing a Car for a Long Drive

On a journey of nearly 140 miles, space matters more than it does across town. A saloon takes four passengers and two suitcases, which is tight for four adults with long-haul luggage. An estate (£220.09 from Terminal 5) takes four cases, and an MPV (£262.11) seats six with four cases. For business travellers, the Executive class (£248.60) seats three and gives you more room to work on the way.

What It Costs Per Person

  • One person in a saloon to Cardiff Central: £203.99
  • Four people sharing a saloon: about £51 each
  • Six people in an MPV (£262.11): about £44 each
  • Eight people in the 8-seater (£262.11): about £33 each

For families and groups, a single car is often close to the price of rail tickets for everyone, and it goes from the arrivals hall straight to your door.

Flying into Gatwick Instead?

Gatwick is much further from Cardiff than Heathrow. A saloon from Gatwick North Terminal to Cardiff Central costs £251.20, and the drive is about 176 miles, taking around three hours and ten minutes outside busy times. If you have a choice of airport for a trip to south Wales, Heathrow (or Bristol Airport) is usually the cheaper and quicker option.
