A taxi from Hastings to Gatwick Airport costs £119.91 in a saloon to the South Terminal and £116.95 to the North Terminal with Airports Taxi UK, a fixed fare for a drive of about 64 miles and 1 hour 27 minutes. The price includes ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and the Gatwick drop-off charge, so the quote is what you pay.

Hastings to Gatwick is a journey that looks simple on a map but takes longer than you’d expect, because there’s no fast direct road or rail link between the East Sussex coast and the airport. Most people flying from Gatwick out of Hastings, St Leonards or Bexhill weigh up the train against an airport transfer to Gatwick, and for early flights or anyone with luggage, a fixed-fare taxi from the door is usually the better trip.

Here you’ll find the full taxi to Gatwick cost for each vehicle, the route your driver will take, recommended pickup times for different flights, and an honest look at the train from Hastings to Gatwick Airport.

The Drive From Hastings to Gatwick

The quickest road route from Hastings to Gatwick Airport usually heads north on the A21 through Robertsbridge and Lamberhurst towards Tonbridge, then joins the M25 at junction 5 and runs west to junction 7 and the M23 spur. Our booking system puts it at about 64 miles and roughly an hour and a half. Depending on traffic and time of day, drivers may instead cut across the Weald on the A264 through East Grinstead, which is shorter in miles but slower on single-carriageway roads.

The A21 can be slow through the roadworks and villages south of Tonbridge, and summer weekends bring extra coast traffic. For morning flights we build that into your pickup time. The fare is fixed whichever route the driver takes.

Planning Your Pickup Time

Airlines usually want you at Gatwick two hours before short-haul flights and three hours before long-haul. From Hastings, we’d suggest:

Flight from Gatwick Suggested pickup in Hastings
6:00am short-haul 2:15am to 2:30am
9:00am short-haul 5:00am
12:00pm long-haul 7:00am
4:00pm short-haul 12:15pm to 12:30pm

Very early pickups are common on this route because the first trains from Hastings arrive too late for dawn departures.

Taxi, Train or Coach?

There’s no direct train from Hastings to Gatwick Airport. You either go along the coast to Brighton and change there for Gatwick, or north via Tonbridge and Redhill, changing at least once. Either way, allow around an hour and 45 minutes to two hours, longer if a connection is missed. The train from Hastings to Gatwick Airport is fine for a solo traveller in the daytime with a small bag, but with suitcases and children, two changes become hard work.

Shared between four people in a saloon, the taxi works out at about £29.98 each, straight to the terminal.

Hastings Pickups

We pick up from the Old Town and the seafront, St Leonards, Ore, Hollington, Silverhill and the new estates on the edge of town, as well as homes in the villages inland. Parking is tight in the Old Town and along the seafront, so if your street is narrow or has restrictions, add a note when you book and your driver will plan where to pull in. You get 5 minutes of free waiting at the door.

Holiday Lets and Hotels

If you’re visiting the Hastings area and flying home from Gatwick, we can collect from holiday lets, guest houses and hotels along the coast. Give the property address and your flight time, and we’ll work back to a pickup time that gets you to the airport comfortably.

Areas Around Hastings We Cover

The same fixed-fare service covers St Leonards-on-Sea, Bexhill-on-Sea, Battle, Rye, Fairlight, Westfield, Robertsbridge, Crowhurst and Winchelsea. Enter your exact address in the booking form to see the price from your door.

Arriving Back at Gatwick

For the journey home, give us your flight number. We track the flight and your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall, holding a name board if you’d like one. You get one hour of free waiting from the time the flight actually lands, so passport queues and baggage delays aren’t a worry. The drive back to Hastings usually takes about an hour and a half.

North or South Terminal?

Gatwick has two terminals, linked by a free shuttle train that takes about two minutes. Your airline decides which one you use; the flight number on your booking lets us check. If you’re not sure, the Gatwick postcodes are RH6 0NP for the South Terminal and RH6 0PJ for the North Terminal, and our Gatwick postcode guide explains which airlines use which.

Dropping Off and Collecting at Gatwick

If a friend or relative drives you instead, they’ll pay Gatwick’s £10 forecourt drop-off charge, and collecting you means the Gatwick short stay pick up car parks, charged by the time spent there. With an Airports Taxi UK booking, the drop-off charge is already in the fare and your driver handles the parking when they collect you. Our guide to picking someone up at Gatwick explains the options if you are collecting someone yourself.

Which Vehicle Do You Need?

  • Up to four people with light luggage: saloon at £119.91 (two large cases).
  • Four people with a case each: estate at £130.05.
  • Five or six people: MPV at £154.06, our 7 seater taxi to Gatwick Airport option for larger families.
  • Up to eight: 8 Seater at £154.06, a minibus to Gatwick Airport with room for eight cases.
  • Something more comfortable: the Executive car at £149.56, or the Executive Minivan at £193.07 for a luxury airport transfer to Gatwick. See our Gatwick chauffeur service for a chauffeur to Gatwick.

Booking Ahead

You can book as soon as your flights are confirmed. The price is fixed at the time of booking and doesn’t rise at peak times, so there’s no advantage in waiting. In the school holidays and at bank holiday weekends, early-morning slots go quickly, so booking a week or two ahead is sensible. If your flight time changes, update the booking or call us and we’ll move the pickup.

What’s Included

  • A fixed fare including ULEZ, the Congestion Charge and the Gatwick drop-off charge.
  • 5 minutes of free waiting at your door when we collect you.
  • One hour of free waiting after landing on airport pickups, with flight tracking.
