Why Fitzrovia to Gatwick takes over an hour
Fitzrovia is in the heart of the West End, north of Oxford Street, and Gatwick is about 30 miles south of the river in a straight line. Every route has to cross central London first. The driver will either work south through Marylebone, Hyde Park Corner and Vauxhall to the A23, or, at busy times, head west to the A40 and the M25 and come round to the M23. Our booker plans this at around 58 miles and 88 minutes, which is a realistic midday figure. Before 7am it is quicker; on a Friday afternoon, slower.
Pickups on Fitzrovia streets
Fitzrovia’s streets are narrow, many are one-way, and Charlotte Street and the surrounding roads are lined with restaurants that take deliveries in the morning. Give us the full address, the building name and the door you will use. On busy streets the driver may wait at the nearest corner with a loading bay and call you. We regularly collect from Fitzroy Square, Charlotte Street, Rathbone Place, Cleveland Street, Great Titchfield Street and the streets around the BT Tower.
Hotels and hospitals nearby
Fitzrovia has several boutique hotels and is next to University College Hospital, so we often collect visiting families and medical staff heading home through Gatwick. For hotels, the driver stops at the main entrance. For UCLH, tell us which entrance and the driver will meet you there; parking around Euston Road is very limited, so please be ready at the booked time.
Taxi or train?
The nearest stations are Goodge Street, Warren Street, Great Portland Street and Tottenham Court Road, where the Elizabeth line now stops. For Gatwick you would usually take the Underground or Elizabeth line to Farringdon and change to Thameslink, or go to Victoria for the Gatwick Express. Either way it is about an hour door to door with a change, and stairs and crowds at the busy stations. With luggage, small children or a group, the car is the easier option. Four sharing a saloon pay about £29.02 each.
Media, design and tech offices
Fitzrovia is full of agencies, production companies and tech firms, and their staff and visitors often fly from Gatwick to European cities. The executive car is a popular choice for client trips at £144.83. If you are booking for a visitor, put their name and phone number in the booking so the driver can contact them directly.
A weekday morning run, in practice
Say your flight leaves Gatwick North Terminal at 10:30 on a Tuesday. A 7:15 pickup on Charlotte Street gets you moving before the worst of the West End traffic. The driver heads down to Hyde Park Corner, crosses at Vauxhall and joins the A23, and at that hour the run through Brixton and Croydon is slow but steady. You should be at the terminal a little after 8:30, with two hours for bag drop, security and a coffee. If your flight were at 7am instead, a 4:30 pickup would get you there in under an hour on empty roads.
Fitzrovia to other airports
Heathrow is closer to W1T than Gatwick, and London City is about 40 minutes east. Luton is reached up the M1, and Stansted via the A12 or the M11. If you have a choice of airports for your trip, compare the fares in the booker before you book flights; the difference can be worth knowing.
What is in the price
One figure, agreed before you travel. Road charges such as ULEZ and the Congestion Charge are in it, so is the airport’s own drop-off or collection fee, and so is the time the driver spends in traffic. We do not add a night rate or a surge when it rains.
Extras are few and stated up front: child seats are £10 each, and a return booked together is 5% cheaper than two singles.
A word on airport charges, since they confuse people. Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and most other UK airports now charge vehicles a fee to drop off at the terminal or to wait for arrivals in the short-stay car park. Some taxi firms quote without it and ask you for it on the day. Ours is already counted, and so is any London clean-air or congestion charge on the route.
Back from Gatwick to Fitzrovia
Book your return trip with your flight number and the driver will be waiting.
For airport collections the driver tracks the flight, so an early or late landing is not a problem. You get one hour of free waiting from the time the plane lands, and the driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board. For home or hotel pickups, the first five minutes of waiting are free.
We bring you to your door in W1, whatever time you land.
What time to book the car
For short-haul flights, we recommend a pickup about three hours before departure; for long-haul, three and a half to four hours. Allow extra on weekday afternoons and in the run-up to Christmas, when Oxford Street traffic spills into the side streets.
Room for everyone and the bags
Count the suitcases before you choose. Saloon: four people, two large cases. Estate: four people, four cases. Executive: three people, two cases. MPV: six people, four cases. 8-seater and executive minivan: eight people, eight cases. Golf bags, skis and pushchairs take extra space, so mention them in the notes and we will check the car fits.
For groups larger than eight, book two vehicles in the same booking and ask for them to travel together; the drivers coordinate so the group arrives at the same time. For very bulky items such as bikes in boxes or surfboards, call us first so we can check what fits.
Areas next to Fitzrovia
We also collect from Marylebone, Bloomsbury, Soho, Covent Garden, Euston and King’s Cross. For Covent Garden, see Covent Garden to Gatwick taxi; for the whole of central London, Central London to Gatwick taxi.
Students and long stays
Fitzrovia has many student flats and long-term lets connected with the universities in Bloomsbury. At the end of term, students heading home through Gatwick often have more luggage than one person can manage on the Underground. Sharing an estate or an MPV with friends on similar flights can bring the cost per person down a lot. Put everyone’s pickup address in the booking and the booker prices the shared trip.
If you are running late
If you are going to be late for the pickup, call us. The driver waits five minutes free at your address. After that, we will do our best, but for a tight flight it is better to tell us early so we can work out the timing together.
How to book
Enter the pickup and drop-off in the form at the top of this page, pick a date and time, and the booker shows a fixed price for every car. Choose one, add your flight number if you have it, and confirm. Prefer to talk? Call +44 7575 470883, any time of day.
Once you book you get a confirmation with the details. The day before, check the pickup time and address are right; if anything needs changing, call us and we update it. Keep your phone on during the pickup window so the driver can reach you if they cannot find the door.
