Getting from N2 to the M23
East Finchley sits high up on the Northern line’s High Barnet branch, about as far from Gatwick as any part of London. Drivers usually take one of two lines. Heading out along the North Circular to the A1 or M1 and anticlockwise round the M25 is the motorway way, and it is often the fastest at off-peak times even though it adds miles. Cutting south through Highgate, Camden and the West End and over the river is shorter on paper, but it runs through the Congestion Charge zone and some of London’s slowest roads.
Our booker estimates the trip at around 64 miles. Your price is fixed, so the choice of route is the driver’s job, not your cost.
Where we collect you
The High Road is a red route in places, so if you live on it we will agree a safe place to stop, often a side street a few metres away. On the residential roads off the High Road, between the station and Fortis Green, the driver pulls up outside the door. We also collect from the Phoenix Cinema area, the flats around Market Place and the streets off the Great North Road towards Highgate.
If you are leaving from the station itself, say so in the notes and pick an exit; the car meets you on the High Road side.
Northern line and Thameslink versus a car
The train route from East Finchley to Gatwick normally means the Northern line into central London, a change to Thameslink at King’s Cross St Pancras or London Bridge, then about 45 minutes more to the airport. Door to door that is often 90 minutes or longer, with two lots of stairs and a crowded carriage at peak times.
A car makes most sense when you have luggage, young children, an older relative, or a flight before about 7am. If four of you share the saloon, it works out at about £29.94 each.
What time should the car come?
We plan around three and a half hours before a short-haul departure from East Finchley, and four hours for long-haul. That gives 86 minutes or more of driving, a buffer for the M25, and two hours or so at the airport. On a Friday afternoon in summer, or the start of a school holiday, add another half an hour.
Coming home from Gatwick to East Finchley
Arrivals work the same way in reverse at the same price. Give us your flight number when you book.
On the way back, give us your flight number and we do the rest. The driver checks the landing time, waits inside arrivals with a name sign, and allows a free hour after the flight lands for passport control and bags. Door-to-door pickups include five minutes of free waiting.
After a long-haul flight it is worth it simply not to have to think about the route home.
People in Muswell Hill, Fortis Green and Highgate
Neighbouring areas are just as easy. Fortis Green and Muswell Hill are a couple of minutes from East Finchley, and Highgate village is a short drive down the hill. For the Suburb itself, see our Hampstead Garden Suburb to Gatwick taxi page. Each address is priced by the booker, so the fare may differ by a pound or two.
Is anything extra to pay on the day?
No. Our quote includes the clean-air and congestion charges in London, airport access fees, parking while the driver waits for you, and fuel. Rush hour or a closed lane does not change it. The only optional add-on is a child or booster seat at £10 each, which you request when booking.
The reason we quote this way is simple: on a long airport run the small extras add up. A drop-off fee here, a congestion charge there, parking while the driver waits for a delayed flight. We would rather show one honest figure. If you book a return trip at the same time, the booker takes 5% off the total.
Sharing the car with friends or family
Splitting a car is cheaper than it sounds. Two couples going on the same holiday can share the estate at £129.93, which has room for four large cases. Six people fit in the MPV, and the 8-seater handles a big family or a sports team with kit. If you are collecting from two addresses, for example one in East Finchley and one in Muswell Hill, add the second pickup and the booker includes it in the price.
A note on luggage
The most common problem we see is too many cases for a saloon. A saloon boot takes two large suitcases. If you have three or four, or a big case plus golf clubs, choose the estate. It costs a little more but saves a frantic repack on the pavement.
Which car do you need?
Pick the car by people and by suitcases, not by people alone. A saloon takes four passengers but only two large cases. An estate takes four with four cases. For five or six people choose the MPV, and for seven or eight with luggage, the 8-seater or the executive minivan.
| Car | Passengers | Large cases |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 4 | 2 |
| Estate | 4 | 4 |
| Executive | 3 | 2 |
| MPV | 6 | 4 |
| 8-seater | 8 | 8 |
| Executive minivan | 8 | 8 |
Hand luggage is rarely the problem; large cases are. As a rule of thumb, one large case equals two cabin bags. A folded pushchair takes about the space of one large case, and so does a set of golf clubs. If in doubt, go one size up: the difference in price is small compared with leaving a bag behind.
