The route from NW11 to Gatwick
Gatwick is on the far side of London from the Suburb, so the question is how to get round or through the middle. One option is straight through: down through Golders Green or Swiss Cottage, across the West End and south over the river to the A23. The other is out to the M1 or A1 and round the M25 to the M23, which is longer but avoids central traffic and the Congestion Charge zone. Our booker plans the route at roughly 62 miles and 81 minutes, and the driver adjusts on the day using live traffic.
Whichever way you go, the fare does not change.
Picking up in the Suburb
Hampstead Garden Suburb is a conservation area with quiet, often narrow roads, closes and cul-de-sacs, plenty of hedges and house names rather than obvious numbers in some streets. Please give us the house number and the road, and the house name if it has one. Around Central Square, Big Wood and the streets near the Heath Extension, parking can be tight, so the driver may stop just past your gate with the hazard lights on and ring you.
We also collect from Temple Fortune, Golders Green and the Lyttelton Road and Falloden Way side, which are all within a few minutes.
Flying for business from north London
Plenty of Suburb residents fly on business from Gatwick, often on early European flights. The executive car (£144.59) suits a client trip. If you need a receipt for expenses, ask for one and we send it by email with the route and the fixed fare. Booking a few trips at once for a team? Call us and we arrange them together.
Why not the train?
From the Suburb the nearest stations are East Finchley and Golders Green on the Northern line. To reach Gatwick you would ride into central London, change to Thameslink, often at King’s Cross St Pancras or London Bridge, and carry on south. Allow nearly two hours door to door with the walking and changing. It is fine with a small bag. With two suitcases and a family it is hard work, and early-morning flights can leave before the first useful trains.
Split between four passengers, the saloon fare is about £28.88 each.
How early should you leave?
Because the Suburb is in north London, give yourself more time than people south of the river. For a short-haul flight we suggest leaving about three and a half hours before departure; for long-haul, four hours. Very early mornings are quicker, but the M25 between the M1 and M23 has frequent roadworks at night, so we still build in a margin.
Families, schools and groups
The Suburb is home to many families, and half-term and Christmas are our busiest weeks for trips from NW11 to Gatwick. If you are four with four big cases, choose the estate at £125.54. Larger families and groups of friends travelling together often take the MPV or the 8-seater, which costs less per head than two saloons. Child seats are £10 each; tell us the child’s age.
A typical trip, step by step
When you book, you get a confirmation with the car, the price and the pickup time. On the morning, the driver arrives in your road at the agreed time and calls if they cannot see the house. Bags go in the boot, and you set off south. Around 81 minutes later you are at the terminal kerb, and the driver lifts the cases out for you. You pay the fare you agreed and nothing more, however slow the traffic was.
What is in the price
One figure, agreed before you travel. Road charges such as ULEZ and the Congestion Charge are in it, so is the airport’s own drop-off or collection fee, and so is the time the driver spends in traffic. We do not add a night rate or a surge when it rains.
Extras are few and stated up front: child seats are £10 each, and a return booked together is 5% cheaper than two singles.
A word on airport charges, since they confuse people. Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton, Birmingham, Bristol, Manchester and most other UK airports now charge vehicles a fee to drop off at the terminal or to wait for arrivals in the short-stay car park. Some taxi firms quote without it and ask you for it on the day. Ours is already counted, and so is any London clean-air or congestion charge on the route.
Arriving back at Gatwick
Book the return when you book the outward trip and you save 5%. The driver tracks your flight and comes to the arrivals hall of the right terminal.
Landing late? We watch the flight number, not the timetable. Waiting is free for the first hour after touchdown, and your driver stands in the arrivals hall holding your name. When we collect from a house or hotel, please be ready at the booked time; five minutes’ grace is included.
Nearby areas
From this page we also cover East Finchley, Finchley Central, Golders Green, Temple Fortune, Highgate and Muswell Hill. For East Finchley specifically, see our East Finchley to Gatwick taxi page. Prices depend on the exact address, so check the form above.
Which car do you need?
Pick the car by people and by suitcases, not by people alone. A saloon takes four passengers but only two large cases. An estate takes four with four cases. For five or six people choose the MPV, and for seven or eight with luggage, the 8-seater or the executive minivan.
| Car | Passengers | Large cases |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon | 4 | 2 |
| Estate | 4 | 4 |
| Executive | 3 | 2 |
| MPV | 6 | 4 |
| 8-seater | 8 | 8 |
| Executive minivan | 8 | 8 |
Hand luggage is rarely the problem; large cases are. As a rule of thumb, one large case equals two cabin bags. A folded pushchair takes about the space of one large case, and so does a set of golf clubs. If in doubt, go one size up: the difference in price is small compared with leaving a bag behind.
Other airports from Hampstead Garden Suburb
Gatwick is the longest of the London airport runs from NW11. Heathrow and Luton are both much closer, and Stansted is reached easily via the North Circular and the M11. If you are comparing flights from different airports, put each one into the booker to see the fare before you decide.
Dropping off at Gatwick
At Gatwick the driver uses the forecourt drop-off at the front of your terminal, a short walk from the check-in desks. The airport charges every car for using it; you do not see that charge because it is in the fare already. If you need help with a wheelchair or assistance at the airport, book it with your airline in advance and tell us, so the driver drops you at the meeting point the airport gives you.
Late-night and very early journeys
We run all night. A 4am pickup in the Suburb is ordinary for us, and the price at 4am is the same as at 4pm. Please keep your phone on and close by, because the driver will call if they cannot find the house, and that is easy to miss at a sleepy hour. If anything changes overnight, a cancelled flight for example, ring +44 7575 470883 and we move the booking.
Why pre-book rather than call a cab on the day
A black cab hailed in north London will take you to Gatwick, but on the meter, and the meter keeps running in traffic on the M25 or through Brixton. App-based cars can surge at peak times and may cancel when they see a long airport run. A pre-booked car has a named driver, a fixed price you agreed in advance and a car sized for your luggage. For a journey of well over an hour, that certainty matters.
How to book
Enter the pickup and drop-off in the form at the top of this page, pick a date and time, and the booker shows a fixed price for every car. Choose one, add your flight number if you have it, and confirm. Prefer to talk? Call +44 7575 470883, any time of day.
Once you book you get a confirmation with the details. The day before, check the pickup time and address are right; if anything needs changing, call us and we update it. Keep your phone on during the pickup window so the driver can reach you if they cannot find the door.
