A taxi from London City Airport to Heathrow costs £89.18 in a saloon with Airports Taxi UK, fixed when you book, for a drive of about 26 miles across London. Allow around an hour and twenty minutes, more at rush hour. The fare includes the Congestion Charge and ULEZ where the route passes through them, and the Heathrow drop-off charge.

London City is the airport most people forget is there. It’s in the Docklands, close to Canary Wharf, and handles short-haul flights to Europe and around the UK. If you’ve landed there and you’re connecting to a long-haul flight from Heathrow, or flew in for meetings and are leaving from the other side of London, you need a reliable way across the city. A fixed-fare London City to Heathrow taxi gets you there without changing trains with your bags.

How Long Does the Journey Take?

It’s only 26 miles from London City to Heathrow, but most of it is through London. The driver either goes west through the city on the A13 and A40 or takes the longer way round on the A406 North Circular and M4, picking whichever is moving better at the time. In light traffic it can take under an hour. On a weekday afternoon, allow 90 minutes or more.

If you’re making a connection, give yourself plenty of time. We’d suggest at least three and a half hours between landing at London City and your Heathrow departure for a long-haul flight. London City is quick to get through on arrival, which helps, but the drive across town is the part you can’t control.

Taxi or Tube From London City to Heathrow?

By public transport, you’d take the DLR from the airport and change onto the Elizabeth line, which runs through central London to Heathrow. It’s a sensible option if you’re travelling light and outside the rush hour, taking around an hour and a half with at least one change. With suitcases, a pushchair or a group, the changes and crowds make it much harder. The Elizabeth line is also very busy in the morning and evening peaks.

A taxi is door to door. You don’t need to buy tickets, find platforms or stand with your luggage, and if there are three or four of you, the fixed fare per person compares well with the train.

Meeting Your Driver at London City Airport

London City is small and quick. Passengers are often through passport control and out of the arrivals hall within 20 minutes of landing. That’s why we track every flight: the driver is there when you come through, not 30 minutes later. They wait inside arrivals with a name board.

You get an hour of free waiting after landing. If you need longer, because of a bag that didn’t make the flight for example, just let us know.

Dropping You at the Right Heathrow Terminal

Heathrow has four passenger terminals, and they’re far enough apart that being dropped at the wrong one costs real time. Tell us your airline and flight number when booking and we’ll take you to the right one. Most British Airways flights use Terminal 5, while other airlines are spread across Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Airlines do move, so it’s worth checking your booking. Our guides to Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 show the drop-off points for each.

Early Mornings, Late Nights and Weekends

London City has shorter opening hours than Heathrow, with fewer flights late in the evening and a quieter weekend schedule. Heathrow runs flights from early morning to late at night. If your two flights don’t line up neatly, you might be travelling between the airports at an odd hour, or need a hotel stop in between. We take bookings 24 hours a day, and late at night the drive across London is usually much quicker, often under an hour.

Heathrow to London City Airport

We run the journey in the other direction too, from any Heathrow terminal to London City. See our Heathrow to London City taxi page for details. It’s a popular route for people flying into Heathrow on a long-haul flight and connecting to a short hop to Edinburgh, Dublin, Amsterdam or another European city from London City.

Business Travellers and Canary Wharf

A lot of people using London City are there for work in Canary Wharf, the City or the ExCeL centre. If you need to stop off between the two airports, for a meeting or to drop something at a hotel, tell us when you book and we’ll quote for the stop. Our executive cars give you a quiet place to work or take calls between flights. Companies booking regularly can open a corporate account for monthly invoicing.

Getting a Taxi to London City Airport

If you’re flying out of London City rather than in, we can collect you from home, a hotel or the office and take you to the terminal. It’s a small airport with short check-in times, so drop-off is quick. For fares from across London, Essex and Kent, see our main London City Airport transfers page.

Which Vehicle Do You Need?

For one or two business travellers with cabin bags, a saloon is plenty. Families and anyone with holiday luggage should look at an estate or MPV. Groups of up to eight can travel together in an 8 seater with room for eight cases. Child seats are available at £10 each.

If Your Flight Is Cancelled or Diverted

London City is more affected by fog and strong winds than some airports, because of its short runway and steep approach. Flights sometimes divert to Southend, Stansted or elsewhere. If that happens, call us. We can usually pick you up from the airport you’ve been diverted to and take you on to Heathrow. The fare is recalculated for the new route, and you won’t be charged for a London City pickup that didn’t happen.

Why Book With Airports Taxi UK?

We cover every London airport, so we know the routes between them better than most. Our London airport taxis run around the clock, the price is fixed, and drivers go the quickest way on the day rather than the cheapest for them. If you’re comparing airport cabs in London, the difference is that our quote includes the charges other firms add at the end.
