Give it 1h15 to 1h40. Most drivers head south on the M25 then pick up the M3, which is the quickest way in on paper — though if the M25 near Heathrow is doing its usual Friday-afternoon thing, cutting across on the A320/A331 towards Farnham can actually beat it. Either way you’re not paying extra for the diversion; that’s the whole point of a fixed fare.

The terminal thing nobody tells first-timers
Southampton isn’t one terminal — it’s five, spread around different bits of the docks, and they’re further apart than they look on a map. City, Ocean, Horizon, Mayflower, QEII. Your cruise line’s confirmation email will say which one. Tell us that when you book and the driver goes straight there — we’d rather know now than have you Googling it in the back seat with twenty minutes to spare.
If you’re flying in the same day you sail
People do it, but honestly, give yourself room. Count on 45 minutes just to get through the terminal and to the kerb with your bags, then the drive on top. If your flight’s landing after lunch and the ship’s final boarding is mid-afternoon, that’s cutting it fine even before you think about traffic. What to book — this bit actually matters
Cruise luggage isn’t carry-on luggage. Two big cases each plus the formal-wear bag adds up fast. A regular saloon fits two large cases comfortably; if there’s more than that, or you’re two couples travelling together, go for an estate or an MPV rather than squeezing everything in and hoping. One bigger car is also cheaper than booking two — worth knowing before you default to “we’ll just get two taxis.”
Coming home: getting off the ship
Disembarkation mornings are a bit of a scrum — several ships often unload within the same hour or two. Most people are through and in the car within half an hour of the gangway opening.
Why not just get the train?
You can, but it’s not straightforward — there’s no direct link from Heathrow, so you’re looking at a change or two plus a taxi from Southampton Central to whichever terminal you’re at.
