Heathrow to Dover isn’t a route we’d call scenic, but it’s a busy one — mostly M25 and M20, about 90 miles, and roughly two hours if the roads behave. If you’re catching a ferry to Calais or picking up a cruise, here’s what’s actually worth knowing before you book.
Two hours is the honest number in normal traffic. The M25 is the wildcard — clockwise round to the M20 works fine most of the day, but hit it at 4pm on a Friday and you’re looking at closer to two and a half. Early starts (before 7am) or mid-morning departures are noticeably calmer.

Most ferry operators want you at the port an hour before sailing, sometimes 90 minutes for peak crossings. Work backwards from that, not from the sailing time on your ticket — border checks at Dover have had their moments in recent years, and giving yourself the full window means a queue doesn’t turn into a missed boat.
Dover runs both Western Docks and Eastern Docks depending on the cruise line, and they’re not next to each other. Same rule as always — tell us the terminal from your booking confirmation and we’ll go straight there instead of guessing.
Doable if your flight lands with a few hours to spare, but Dover’s a bit further out than most people expect from the map — allow the full two hours plus 45 minutes off the plane. If it’s genuinely tight, an evening-before hotel near Dover removes all the risk, and we can do that transfer too.
Ferry passengers with a car-load of holiday luggage or cruise passengers with the full two-suitcases-each situation should think estate or MPV rather than a standard saloon — one bigger vehicle usually costs less than splitting into two cars anyway, and nobody’s sat with a case on their knee for two hours.
