Chelmsford to Luton is a cross-county run — you’re going from one side of the M25 arc almost to the other, about 45 miles, taking somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half. It’s not the shortest route on our books, but it’s a regular one, mostly for budget-airline flyers who’ve found a cheap Luton fare and need a sensible way to actually get there.
65-85 minutes covers it in normal traffic. The route runs up through the M25’s northern arc, then onto the M1 for the final stretch — the M25 section is where most of the variability lives, particularly around the M11 and A1 junctions during rush hour.

Unlike the short hops to Stansted or Southend, Luton’s far enough that traffic actually matters. For an early flight, we’d suggest leaving with a good hour and a half of buffer rather than cutting it to the drive time alone — the M25’s northern stretch can be unpredictable even outside the obvious rush hours, and Luton’s drop-off area gets genuinely busy on peak departure mornings.
There’s a train option via London, changing to reach Luton Airport Parkway, then the shuttle to the terminal — workable for a solo traveller with light luggage, but by the time you’ve added the change and the shuttle wait, it’s not dramatically faster than driving, and it’s a lot more moving parts for a family with cases.
