A taxi from Gatwick to Cambridge costs from £152.60 in a saloon to the city centre and takes about two hours. It’s a long cross-country trip, and the main reason people book it is to avoid changing trains in London with luggage. The fare is fixed when you book. Gatwick to Cambridge Fares

One-way fares from Gatwick North Terminal to Cambridge railway station, quoted from our online booker on 28 October 2026 for a midday pickup:

Vehicle Passengers Suitcases Fare
Saloon 4 2 £152.60
Estate 4 4 £165.23
Executive 3 2 £188.26
MPV 6 4 £196.28
8-seater 8 8 £196.28

Addenbrooke’s and the Cambridge Biomedical Campus come out slightly lower, at £149.21 in a saloon. South Terminal fares are very close to North Terminal. Your fare is fixed for your address and doesn’t go up at night.

The Journey

It’s about 95 miles, all on the motorway network: the M23 and M25 around London, then the M11 north to Cambridge. Outside busy periods it takes about one hour 50 minutes to two hours 15 minutes. You stay in the same seat with your bags in the boot the whole way.

Taxi or Train?

Thameslink runs trains from Gatwick to Cambridge, so for one person travelling light the train is a fair option. They’re slow, though, stopping all the way through central London, and they can be crowded at peak times with nowhere to put large cases. A taxi is simpler if:

  • you’re travelling as a family or group (a full saloon is about £38 each)
  • you’re going to a college, the science parks or a village outside the city rather than the station
  • you’ve got heavy luggage, such as students moving in at the start of term
  • you land late in the evening

Students and Academic Visitors

Students, visiting academics and conference guests often fly into Gatwick on their way to Cambridge. If you’re going to a college, give us the porters’ lodge address so your driver goes to the right gate. An estate takes four people and four cases. For one student with lots of luggage, it often makes more sense than a saloon.

Meeting Your Driver at Gatwick

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall at the North or South Terminal with a name board. We track your flight and you get 60 minutes of free waiting from landing.

Related Routes

Stansted is much closer to Cambridge. See Stansted to Cambridge and Cambridge to Stansted Airport. There’s also Heathrow to Cambridge and Cambridge to Luton Airport. All Gatwick routes are on Gatwick airport taxi.

North or South Terminal

The two Gatwick terminals are a few minutes apart by the free shuttle, and the fare hardly changes between them. To Cambridge station, quoted from our online booker on 29 October 2026:

Gatwick terminal Saloon Estate Executive 8-seater
North Terminal £152.60 £165.23 £188.26 £196.28
South Terminal £150.76 £163.26 £186.08 £193.91

Check your booking for your terminal. Your driver will meet you inside the arrivals hall of the terminal you land at. If your airline changes your terminal at short notice, flight tracking picks it up, and your driver goes to the right one.

Fares Across Cambridgeshire and North Essex

We drive to any address, not just Cambridge station. Saloon and 8-seater fares from Gatwick North Terminal, quoted on 29 October 2026:

Gatwick to Distance Saloon 8-seater
Saffron Walden 89 miles £143.95 £185.38
Cambridge Biomedical Campus 94 miles £149.21 £192.11
Cambridge station 95 miles £152.60 £196.28
King’s College (city centre) 97 miles £154.57 £198.86
Newmarket 100 miles £157.23 £202.36
Cambridge Science Park 102 miles £158.27 £203.74
Huntingdon 111 miles £168.96 £217.45
Ely 113 miles £175.14 £225.05

Saffron Walden is just off the M11 south of Cambridge, which is why it costs less than the city. The Science Park and the villages to the north are on the far side of Cambridge, so they cost a little more.

Cambridge to Gatwick

For a flight out of Gatwick, a saloon from Cambridge station to the North Terminal costs £150.79, and the 8-seater £194.04, quoted on 29 October 2026. With the 5% return discount, a saloon there and back comes to £288.22 instead of £303.39.

The drive is around 95 miles on the M11 and the M25, and the M25 is the part most likely to slow you down, especially on Friday afternoons and in the weekday morning rush. Allow about two hours for the drive, plus your check-in time, and add a margin at peak times.

Driving into Central Cambridge

Parts of central Cambridge have restricted access for cars, and several streets around the colleges are closed to general traffic. If you’re staying in college or at a city-centre hotel, your driver will drop you as close as the roads allow. Add the exact address and any gate or entrance instructions in the booking notes. The colleges’ porters’ lodges can usually tell you the best place for a car to stop.

The Science Park and Biomedical Campus

Many visitors to Cambridge from abroad are heading to work rather than study, at the Biomedical Campus around Addenbrooke’s in the south, or the Science Park and business parks in the north. The two are on opposite sides of the city, and the fares show it: £149.21 to the Biomedical Campus and £158.27 to the Science Park. Give us the building name and the company in the notes, so your driver goes to the right entrance.

Newmarket and Race Days

Newmarket is about 13 miles east of Cambridge and costs £157.23 in a saloon from Gatwick. On big race days, roads around the town and the racecourses are busier than usual, so allow extra time and give us the hotel or stud address rather than just “Newmarket”.

Which Car for a Term’s Luggage?

Students arriving for the start of term usually bring far more than a holiday’s worth of luggage. As a guide:

  • Saloon (£152.60): four passengers and two large suitcases. Fine for one student with two cases and a backpack.
  • Estate (£165.23): four passengers and four large cases. The usual choice for one student with a parent, or a student with boxes as well as cases.
  • MPV or 8-seater (£196.28): six or eight passengers with four or eight cases. Good for several students arriving on the same flight and sharing the cost.

If you’re unsure, tell us how many bags you have and their sizes in the booking notes, and we’ll confirm the right car before your flight.

Is Gatwick the Right Airport for Cambridge?

Stansted is the nearest London airport to Cambridge, and if your flight lands there the trip is much shorter. See Stansted to Cambridge taxi for those fares. Heathrow is roughly the same distance as Gatwick, but on the western side, so the fares are close. Gatwick still makes sense when it has the best flight, which is often true for routes from southern Europe, the Caribbean and some North American cities. In that case a direct car avoids the longest part of the train journey through central London.

What It Costs Per Person

  • Two people: about £76 each
  • Four people sharing a saloon: about £38 each
  • Eight people in the 8-seater (£196.28): under £25 each
