Heathrow to Tilbury takes you right across London the long way round — M25 all the way, roughly 55 miles, about an hour and a quarter. Not the prettiest drive, but it’s the one people booking London’s cruise terminal need, so let’s get into what actually matters.
How long, honestly?
Around 1h10–1h30. It’s almost entirely M25, clockwise, over the Dartford Crossing near the end. That crossing is really the only thing that varies the timing — clear outside rush hour, a proper slog if you hit it at 5pm on a weekday.

Tilbury’s actually easy once you’re there
Unlike some of the bigger ports, the London Cruise Terminal at Tilbury is small and check-in tends to move quickly — the terminal itself isn’t where the stress is on this route. It’s more about the crossing and getting across London in reasonable time, which is exactly why people book a car rather than dealing with trains, tube changes, and a taxi from Tilbury Town at the end of it.
Flying in same-day
Manageable — 45 minutes off the plane, then the drive. Boarding at Tilbury tends to open reasonably late morning with final call an hour or so before sailing, so a midday flight landing gives you decent breathing room. Tighter connections, as always, we can handle with flight tracking, but give yourself the buffer if you can.
Luggage-wise
Same story as anywhere else — couple with full cruise cases, go estate; family or two couples sharing, MPV. It’s genuinely cheaper than two cars and a lot less hassle at drop-off.
After the cruise
